CMHA Kelowna Providing Relief and Support During Summer Heat

Through its Community Roots Outreach Program, CMHA Kelowna staff are actively connecting with people in the community to provide essential items such as water, sunscreen, heat-appropriate clothing, and other basic supplies while also conducting wellness checks.
“The rising temperatures we’re seeing right now are more than uncomfortable—it’s dangerous, particularly for people living outside or with limited access to cooling options,” says CMHA Kelowna CEO, Mike Gawliuk. “We are committed to doing everything we can to protect our most vulnerable community members and to make sure no one is left behind during these challenging conditions.”
Gawliuk adds that the risks extend beyond people who are unhoused. “There are many individuals in our community—seniors, those with mobility barriers, and people living in poverty—who may not be able to safely access what they need during a heat event. It’s important that we all stay aware and look out for one another.”
To support this work, CMHA Kelowna is currently accepting donations of high-need items, including:
· Men’s summer clothing
· Women’s summer clothing
· Reusable water bottles
· Reusable bags/backpacks
· Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, nail clippers, hairbrushes, etc.)
· Umbrellas
· Hand-held fans
Donations can be dropped off Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 4:00pm at CMHA Kelowna’s office located at 504 Sutherland Avenue.
